Data and Information
by JWhiteley on Feb.22, 2011, under Podcast, VCE IT Unit One
Hi guys (& girl),
Sorry that I am not in today, but as my eye is all gunky and will hardly open, well I made my choice. Ofcourse, I am only hoping that you are seeing this and I am not wasting my time. Have a read and a recap of what little, we have covered so far then move on. There is an activity and thoughts to complete. You should be putting your thoughts into your own blog posts. Those that don’t have a blog yet should realise that you shouldn’t miss my class. Save your work in a word document and we will get you set up soon.
The following is all taken from the Text book and then put into my own words. I have included some questions and not included all of the answers. We will discuss the answers tomorrow in class. I would prefer that you try and workas a class and discuss your thoughts together before you write your reflections in your blog. But it is your call.
Data and Information.
Unit 1 Outcome 1 focuses on transforming “Data” into “Information” and the managemeent/manipulation of it before it becomes a solution/representation/output.
We have already spoken about the Four Key Functions of Computers and had a very simple chat about Data and some of its uses as information. Media Ratings being the main eaxample.
How is Data Presented (Output)?
Can you answer that question? Data turned into information can be represented in a wide variety of different mediums; but they fall into three main categories:
- Hard Copy
- Digital
- an Action.
Provide an example of what those three mediums refer to. (Page 4, Information Technology: VCE Units 1&2 fith edition)
Newspapers are the perfect example of an output. They take data, manipulate that data and output it for people to easily process.
Go online and find three Newspapers from around the world. Yoy will need to find the Digital and Hardcopy representation of each. Use the screen capture to take samples of them and then discuss the differences you see. Discuss:
- The digital differences between the different papers.
- The hardcopy differences between the different papers.
- The digital and hardcopy differences between papers in general.
Think about:
- Why there are differences between hardcopy and digital representations of the same information?
- What are some advantages an disdavantages of printed and online papers?
I hope this is enough work for you all. We will discuss this in class as well. At this point it is all a learning process.

This blog has undergone a number of changes over the years. It was first established as a class blog but has now become a reflection tool. It is my hope that it continues to grow and ultimately becomes a resource to me and others.
Presently it is the refelction device for the BASTOW Emerging Leaders Program, which can be accessed through its static page. Feel free to listen to the podcasts and take from them what you will.
